FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Black and Latino Political Action Committees Call on Beacon Mutual
Insurance Company to Appoint People of Color to their Board

In light of the recent report outlining the mismanagement at Beacon Mutual
Insurance Company, and the following suspension of two of its board
members as well as the resignation of another, the Rhode Island Black
Political Action Committee and the Rhode Island Latino Political Action
Committee (RILPAC), call on Beacon Mutual to appoint a person or persons
of color to their board.  These appointments will provide for the
representation of the interests of the growing people of color population in
the state, as well as the diverse client base of Beacon Mutual.

As the largest writer of worker’s compensation insurance in the state of
Rhode Island, the Board of Directors for the Beacon Mutual Insurance
Company should reflect the changing complexion of the workers they insure.
Over the past several years this State has seen a 56% increase in the number
of Latino businesses, as well as 40% increases in Black- and Asian-owned
businesses, respectively.  However, the board of Beacon Mutual has not been
reflective of the State’s diverse business population.

If the vision of Beacon Mutual is “dedicated to good corporate citizenship
through our contributions and involvement in activities that will benefit the
community,” the leadership of the board must reflect this very community
they intend to represent.  We call on their leadership to appoint individuals
with diverse experiences to assist the company in its transition towards
change.

Sincerely,

Julian Dash
